Hey all!

I'm Stefan, 23 and just looking for a topic for my bachelor thesis. I am studying Medicine and Computer Science and I'm interested in support tools (software) for people with disabilities. I'm just in the beginning of my research and so I am opened for any idea. Are there any gaps in your daily life with computers? Or is there any program which is not accessible for you? Maybe a not user friendly interface? I would work on this project for 4 months, just that you know how much time i can invest in that.

Thanks in advance and greetings,
Stefan

Okay, I have an idea for you, perhaps even a software project you can open source.  I would do it myself but I just don't have time...

For people who suffer from forms of Aphasia (inability to speak), the only option is portable text to speech systems like DynaVox, which unfortunately cost $4,500 and higher.  If the persons insurance wont cover it, the person is screwed.

I had an idea about converting old portable car GPS units into text to speech devices since all the hardware is already there and they cost as little as $99.  They're all based on WinCE or Linux and there are suitable development platforms for both.  All it needs is an on screen keyboard, intelligent predictive spelling and a voice.

There is an idea if you want to run with it.

Hi all,

thanks for your ideas. I went a differnet way and wrote a Firefox extension, which should help people with color blindness. It's still in development, so it's not perfect (and not registered as an official firefox extension).

Have a look if you want: http://colorxtractor.sourceforge.net/

Best wishes, Stefan
